Oistrakh was peerless, a real poet of theviolin, and his performances here are always fascinating and beautiful tolisten to. Time and again here he turns a phrase in a way that seems justright, and some moments are breath-taking. He is accompanied by his long-timesonata partner Lev Oborin. Oborin is always competent and, as you listen, thereis little or nothing to complain about, but if you compare him with, say,Schneiderhahn's partner in the same sonatas (Kempff) or Francescatti's(Casadesus), you realise that there is more in the music than Oborin can find.So it is a rather unequal partnership. I must stress, however, that Oborin doesnot let the side down. Oistrakh's mastery comes across untrammelled, and it isjust a pity that he is not playing with someone of comparable stature.
